Why Home School Testing Is Necessary?

by Andy Austim

Home school testing is necessary as it helps to identify a curriculum which is best suited to your child. Each child is different and has different learning requirements as well. If you try to teach your child using a curriculum designated to be appropriate based on age only, it may not work if the child is not ready for the materials yet or if his or her abilities far exceed the provided materials.

A home schooling curriculum might not work for the child if it’s not enough of a challenge. The converse is true as well. Indeed, boredom or frustration is the usual reason why kids do not seem to learn. It is tough to pay attention and soak up material which isn’t interesting or too difficult. The goal is finding the proper curriculum for a student’s needs; this is what standardized home school testing does.

Most providers of home schooling related products will be able to give you the correct home school testing materials for your children. A test that is given most often is the California Achievement Test. Grades from kindergarten all the way through twelfth are able to use this test.

Home school testing will cover many things in which are important to the subject grade level. For instance word analysis would be on a test for kindergarteners, along with basic comprehension and math concepts. As far as older grade levels, the test would cover reading, English language, math computation and vocabulary, as well as a wide range of other subjects.

Testing for home school learning may be done online by several companies. Other companies have the child take several tests at home, which are then mailed to a certain location for grading. Some companies will allow parents administer the home school testing.

Informal tests are designed for parents to evaluate the student’s level of achievement. The informal home school testing is usually designed so as to be detailed in specific requirements and items. This is the reason for emphasizing certain specific goals and procedures and at the same time giving lower weight to others.

To be properly evaluated the home school testing results should have expert analysis. The test must only measure the child’s knowledge. The parent may not help with the test. In this way the child’s level of learning can be accurately evaluated. Of course this high standard of learning can only be attained in a home school environment that is a good match for the child’s learning abilities.
