Hypermiling Techniques

by Bryan Alan

As fuel prices continue to reach new record levels, many people are looking for feasible ways to squeeze more miles per gallon out of their vehicles. Fact is, while there may be some market corrections coming for gas prices, the days of $2 per gallon fuel are gone forever. One technique to help you save money on fuel that has been around for many years, but only now gaining real momentum is called hypermiling.

In reality, hypermiling has been around for many years - used by the owners of hybrid and electric vehicles to even further increase the fuel economy benefit. The results of these efforts have been increases upwards of 80 to 100% above the listed miles per gallon for vehicles.

An important note to consider is that there are some hypermiling techniques that are actually not legal, and even not safe - but there are literally hundreds of hypermiling techniques that are perfectly safe and legal to do. There is not a requirement of certain vehicle or engine types needed to effectively hypermile and increase fuel economy dramatically. In fact, some of the best benefit can be seen in the larger engine types so commonly sold in the early part of this century.

Several practical examples of hypermiling can be implemented in as little as 10 minutes. While each idea will not achieve significant fuel savings on its own, the combination of several hypermiling techniques will build on each other, and result in aggregate significant savings. There are several excellent guides available that contain huge lists of practical ideas on how to increase mileage to get your started.

People sometimes over-think when looking for ways to increase mileage, but most great hypermiling techniques are really quite simple. Maybe the most practical and simplest idea is to remove “dead weight” from your vehicle by removing the unnecessary items in your storage areas. Additionally, consider using less of your actual brake when coming to a stop and let the cars natural momentum slow it down.

Gas prices may never return to levels previously experienced. Take advantage of the technology and insight of experienced hypermilers and start saving at the fuel pump today. Your wallet will thank you.
