How to Avoid a Termite Infestation

by Darren K. Thompson

Termites are a big problem that anyone buying or selling a home in Sydney needs to be very concerned about. Did you know that one out of five homes in Sydney has termites? These little insects can do a lot of damage to your home without you even knowing it. You cannot afford to assume anything when it comes to termites; they can cost you a good deal of money if left unchecked.

Once these pests get into your home they are extremely hard to get rid of. It is far easier and less expensive to keep them out rather than to have to deal with them once they get settled in. Keeping termites from moving into your house is not that hard. There are plenty of ways to do this, but you have to take action as soon as possible. Get to them before they get to you.

The first thing that you need to do is to stay vigilant. Most experts recommend that you check your home for termites every year. While this might seem to be fairly often, remember that it doesn’t take all that long for termites to get in, make themselves at home and to do some damage.

The signs you are looking for will occur in places that termites love, including subterranean locations and areas that have a lot of dry wood. Look for piles of termite dirt in wooden ceilings, and make sure that you keep track of any mud tunnels that show that the little pests are digging around.

If you are building a home or adding to your existing home, take the time to choose materials that are resistant to termite invasion. Redwoods, juniper and cedar for instance are highly attractive woods with wonderful aromas. The natural oils in these woods makes them less susceptible to incursion by termites and other insects. Also strive to keep things as dry as possible. Make sure that you don’t allow water to accumulate in or around your home, and that if you have a basement area, that it is kept dry.

Not only does your home need to be unattractive to termites, your yard and surrounding area needs to be considered as well. Keep plants, flowers or any type of vegetation away from the house to prevent mold and dampness from forming on the exterior walls.

Make sure there are no leaks spraying on or under your house. Position sprinklers so they do not splash the house when operating. Ensure that all cracks on the outside are filled in with proper sealant. Always check the bottoms of the walls which are likely to get damp, take steps to seal them and keep them dry.

Taking care to consider how to keep termites away can save you a lot of problems later. You may save money and a lot of grief in the years to come. If you are thinking of living in Sydney and owning your own home or even selling one, don’t overlook the importance of dealing with termites.
