Home Improvement - Purchasing the Right Bathtub
Are you remodeling your bathroom and replacing your old bathtub? Don’t just walk into a home improvement store without planning and research or you’ll either leave frustrated and empty handed or you’ll end up with a tub that doesn’t fit your bathroom. Here are some things to do before walking in to the hardware store.
First off, figure out what type of bathtub you want and need. Some prefer to sacrifice bathroom space for a large Jacuzzi size tub or others prefer a bathtub that has more shower options since they prefer to shower most of the time. Keep in mind, though that if you’re planning on reselling your home you should purchase a bathtub that leaves sufficient room in the bathroom while still giving adequate room in the tub.
You’ll also need to determine what material you would like your tub to be made out of. Bathtubs come in a variety of materials and much of it depends on your budget. There are tubs made from porcelain, marble, stone and plastic composite material. Plastic is cheaper than porcelain or marble (especially for large, jacuzzi style tubs) but not as durable.
Bathtubs also come in a variety of colors, especially if you’ll be purchasing one made out of plastic composite. Think about the decor of your new bathroom so you can coordinate your new tub. It’s not necessary to settle on a plain white but be weary of contemporary colors that will go out of style too quickly. Again, keep in mind that if you’re planning on reselling your property then you should think of a color that will fit with other’s dcor. Off-white and beige colors will usually fit your dcor and help hide stains and scratches.
After determining type and material, you’ll need to find out the specifications for your tub. Take complete measurements of your bathroom and don’t forget to take measurements of the entrance; you don’t want to purchase a tub that won’t fit through the door unless you’re planning on brining it through another way. Also take measurements of the tub’s space including the height, width, and length. Also determine the total square footage of the bathroom and tub’s space as well as any tools you may need.
Once you’ve done your planning it’s time to do some research. Go online and price compare to find a tub that will fit your budget. Unless you don’t live near a hardware or home improvement store, it is not recommended to make such a large purchase online. Any savings in cost will usually be eaten up in delivery costs. It’ll also be difficult to return defective merchandise or exchange it.
With these tips you’ll be ready to purchase a tub that you’ll be happy with and that will increase the value of your home.
