Exotic and tropical flowers and plants continue to grow in popularity amongst home decorators and garden hobbyists. They are some of the most beautiful and brilliant plants available and come in a huge variety of colors and textures. Some are almost alien in appearance and can mesmerize the beholder.

Entering your own tropical garden can be like leaving the world for a tropical paradise vacation. It’s no wonder this hobby is becoming so popular nowadays.

Raising tropical plants and flowers successfully requires dedication and work, but it is not difficult or laborious. In fact, it’s a lot of fun once you get started!

Outdoor or Indoor? If you live in a gardening zone lower than eight, you’ll probably not be able to grow your tropical plants outdoors full-time. Growers in these zones often keep their plants in portable containers so they can be moved in and out of doors to match the season and weather. Greenhouses are also popular for this area of growing.

If you live in a warmer climate, however, you can probably plant a tropical garden outside, permanently, and use mulch or other layers to shield the plants from the worst weather.

Containers The container you use will depend not only on your sense of style, but also on the size of the plant at maturity. Some plants get quite large, so a larger container will be needed. Often, growers will start a plant in a smaller container and move it up in size as the plant grows. This is fine if you have the time and expertise to do this properly. For most of us, though, this is a lot more work than we’re ready for, so choosing a large enough container to start with is best.

The drainage properties and water retention properties of the container are also important. Most tropical plants require lots of water and need that water to be retained, so a container without drainage is optimal. Other plants will require long dry spells followed by lots of water, so an appropriate pot should be considered there too.

Humidity If you’re in a dry zone and your plants require humidity to thrive, you’ll want to consider options to keep the air around the plants moist. A greenhouse usually does this quite readily, but a room in your house or growing in the back yard is not so accommodating. In these cases, you’ll want to consider misters, shrouds, and other options that can help the plant keep humidified.

Other plants, such as the moth orchids, will prefer it to be dry, so you’ll need to make sure they’re out of reach of lawn sprinklers, the watering of other plants, etc. A humidity level for moth orchids is ideally at 55-75%.

Many plants will adapt to considerable changes in their environment without too much problem, but knowing the needs of your tropicals is important if you want them to look their best. Caring for them is a work of love, though, and is enjoyable year-round. So try growing some exotic plants and escape to a tropical paradise!

Whilst landscaping can give many benefits to the homeowner, there are a few basic problems that we have to deal with. The following article will list some of these problems and suggest a solution to them.

Dealing with Pests

The unwelcome insects and animals that come uninvited into our gardens can, if not dealt with, lead to significant damage. They can also create problems for humans and our pets through the spread of infection. One solution is to use pest proof products, repellants or traps, but these can have a negative impact on the environment as well if they are not carefully used.

To avoid this, it is wise to consider alternatives. Talk to other people in your area about their methods of pest control - this may include pest controllers, who wil be able to advise you on the safe use of chemicals.

Dealing with Irrigation

The correct use of water is a significant issue and if you are installing an irrigation system it must be done properly. Too little or too much water can kill a plant or retard its growth and in some cases can spread disease through pathogens living in the water that has pooled.

The best option for do it yourself gardeners is the drip system. It should be checked on a regular basis to ensure that there are no unwanted leaks or blockages.

Dealing with Climatic Changes

If you choose the wrong types of plants for the climate in your area, you are doomed to fail. There are some plants that do not cope well with too much snow, rain, cold or heat.

To avoid this problem, your landscape should be created in “layers” - taller plantings at the back, then a middle level and short level. This will reduce damage to the more sensitive plants from wind. If you have extreme weather conditions, it is best to choose plants that are native to the area and are adaptable to the climate.

Dealing with Maintenance

It is vital that regular maintenance be carried out to keep the landscape looking good. This can be a rather arduous task, especially if there are changes in climate or if the area is a large one and the plants are spaced out.

If you want to avoid this, once again choose native plants as they will generally require lower levels of maintenance. Smaller gardens with less “busy” designs will be easier to look after. Choose less variety in plantings to lower the workload.

Dealing with Plant Diseases

Diseases and pests are common in gardens. Many plants are susceptible to disease or pest attack, for example, thrips or black spot on roses. Trying to control disease can be difficult once it takes hold, so it is best to employ preventative measures.

In the first instance, ensure that the plants you choose are healthy and keep a watchful eye on them for the first few months. Any diseased parts of the plant should be removed as soon as they are found. You can apply an organic pesticide to prevent pest attack.

Dealing with Drainage

Drainage is not something that we give much thought to, but it is important. Without proper drainage, erosion, leaks and boggy areas can form. These boggy areas can in turn create an ideal environment for algae, fungi and mosquitoes, ruining all your efforts.

Make sure that you include drainage in the initial plans and if you do not feel confident about dealing with the drainage yourself, consult an expert.

Dealing with Weeds

Weeds are just unwanted plants in all gardens and landscapes and are something we all have to cope with. If you grow anywhere and if let them take control, they will ruin the look even of your hillside landscaping designs and all your hard work will have gone to waste.

Mulching the garden is a great weed suppressant and you can use weedicides or herbicides as well, taking care to avoid contact with the plants you want to keep.

Dealing with Hazardous Chemicals

There may be times when a landscaper has to use hazardous chemicals in the garden and they must ensure that they follow the precautions on the labels to avoid serious health problems. Some of these chemicals are known to cause cancer, nerve damage or birth defects when they are not used properly.

One solution to this problem is to avoid using the more hazardous chemicals and wherever possible using organic alternatives.

Spider plants make excellent houseplants because they are very easy to grow, require little maintenance in order to thrive, and adapt well to the conditions of most homes and other indoor spaces. They are also used frequently in schools because they are easy to propagate and require so little care. Particularly if you are a beginning gardener, spider plants are excellent starter plants to add some greenery to your home.

Spider plants are happiest when grown in containers or hanging baskets, which will provide plenty of room for their shoots. However, you should not grow them in containers that are too large for the size of the plant, because they enjoy being a little rootbound.

At the end of their long stalks, spider plants will begin to grow new baby plants. If you wish to grow more spider plants from your original plant, just cut these small plants off the ends of the stalks, and place their roots in water. When the roots of these new plants have grown to be an inch long, transplant them into containers filled with potting soil.

When you are growing spider plants, keep in mind that they like well drained, rich potting soil, although they can tolerate a wide range of soil conditions. You should water them at least once every week. Give them liquid fertilizer once or twice per month, but take care not to over water them or give them too much fertilizer. In fact, you may want to dilute the fertilizer to half its recommended strength, or skip fertilizer entirely if your plants are healthy and thriving without it. If you are over watering or over fertilizing, you will know it because the tips of your spider plant’s leaves will turn brown. If this happens, remove the brown leaves, and adjust the amount of fertilizer and water. Your plant will soon grow new, green leaves to replace the brown ones. If this does not solve the issue, you may want to try distilled water, as some chemicals in tap water may be harmful for your spider plants.

Although your spider plants will do just fine in the low light conditions found in many areas of the typical home, they also enjoy some sunshine. You can place your plants in a sunny window once or twice per week, but you should not forget them there. If you leave them in direct sunlight for too long, the leaves may turn brown. Also be sure not to leave them near the window on cold nights, as they prefer warmer temperatures.

Caring for Spider plants are very rewarding to grow. If you take proper care of them and grow new plants by replanting the baby spider plants on the end of the shoots, you will soon have a whole house filled with beautiful spider plants. Keep in mind that plants can help improve air quality by cleaning the air. They also make wonderful gifts to help your friends and family begin their own spider plant gardens. Spider plants can be grown by beginning gardeners, and require only a little effort to help them thrive.

by Kent Higgins

When trying to buy a new plant, you may realize that there are more decisions to make than you’d thought. You may come home with too many or too few plants, or purchase plants that aren’t compatible with each other. Of course, you also need to consider the quality of each plant, making sure it is in good condition to thrive once you get it home.

Here are a few things to look for when buying plants:

1) Where will they be going? Whether you are looking for houseplants or plants for your yard, this is an important consideration. If you’re choosing indoor plants, decide where they will be kept, so that you’ll know how much or how little sunlight they will receive. The same goes for outdoor plants. Have an idea of where they will be going so that you know the conditions in which they’ll be grown.

2) Which plants are already there? Especially if you’re trying to fill out an existing spot, be aware of the surrounding plants. Make sure that your choice is compatible for the space you have. For example, have the surrounding plants already reached their full mature size? If not, choose a smaller plant, leaving room for everything to grow. You may also want to choose annuals instead of perennials, so that your existing plants will have room to grow before you choose a permanent plant for that spot. Otherwise, it may become over-crowded, and the plants will have trouble thriving.

3) What is your end goal? Do you want to add different colors and textures to a flower bed? If so, you can probably choose plants by these characteristics without any complications. If you’re trying to create a certain style, like an English cottage garden or a desert cactus garden, be sure to look for plants that would fit into this environment.

4) How healthy are the plants? Once you are at the nursery or garden center, pay attention to the individual plants you’re choosing. Also consider your own personal gardening abilities. If you’re not sure how to take care of the plant, stay away from ones that look like they’ll need extra care to nurse them back to optimum health.

5) How much do you have to spend? Many gardeners spend more than they had intended to once they walk into a nursery. It’s easy to get caught up in choosing beautiful plants for your yard, but be sure to stick to your budget. It may be helpful to write down the cost when shopping for plant. Some plants can be costly for their foliage while others like dracaena marginata can be costly because of their trunks. That way, you won’t keep adding to your purchase until you go way over-budget.

Buying plants can be fun, and if you consider these tips, you’ll be able to choose plants that will thrive in your garden. Whether you are choosing one plant to fill in a space or several plants to create a new bed, consider these questions to help you choose wisely.

by Kent Higgins

Leaf cuttings are a very popular method of plant propagation, and they can be made in several ways. Many house plants, including African Violets and Gloxinia, are propagated by cutting a leaf where it joins the stem, and planting this leaf in the starting soil mixture. Within just a few weeks, roots will start to grow at the point of the cut. Then, the new plant should be transplanted into a regular potting soil mixture.

With other plants, such as Sansevieria, with long pointed foliage, you should cut the leaves into four inch sections, and set these sections right end up in a starting soil mixture. From the lower cut, roots will soon form.

Rex Begonia, another popular houseplant, is propagated using still another way of leaf cuttings. With a razor, make cuts across the heavy veins on the leaf’s underside. Then place the leaf face up on the starting mixture. Use toothpicks or pins to make sure it contacts the soil, and new plants will soon form at the cut marks.

Growing your very own plants through leaf cuttings and other propagation methods is very rewarding. You can grow your own indoor garden for the price of just a little work, and reap tremendous rewards. You can grow many new plants from the leaves of your old plants. Plus, many people have found gardening to be a relaxing activity, a reward in and of itself.

When you are making leaf cuttings to increase your indoor garden, the plants from which you are cutting leaves are also benefiting from the trim. In order to keep your plants beautiful and healthy, you should pinch, prune, and cut back the plants when appropriate. Particularly in low light conditions, as found in many homes, plants tend to grow tall and leggy, with little foliage at the bottom of the plant. To make your plants full and even from the base to the top, you’ll need to cut them back to encourage growth in the right directions. Trim back any shoots that do not fit with the overall shape of the plant.

Particularly if you are a new gardener, the idea of cutting off healthy branches, leaves, and even flowers and how to care for your plants will make you nervous. However, these measures must be taken if you want the overall plant to be healthy and proportionate. Pinch off shoots that are not growing in the correct place, allowing your plant to spend its energy growing in the right directions. Even if this shoot has buds or flowers, it should be removed. By pruning your plant, you can reasonably control its growth. Although some plants will grow properly without help, like the African violet they requires exactly the right amount of sun, light, and water, among several other conditions. The vast majority of your houseplants would greatly benefit from pruning and cutting back, and you can use the leaves you’ve cut to grow new plants.

Indoor plants in interesting pots can be a beautiful addition to your home. Many people buy plants, only to leave them in their original nursery containers! These plastic containers are not only ugly, but they also make it hard for your plants to thrive. Most houseplants need special plants to allow their roots room to grow. When you are searching for new pots for your houseplants, there are several types of materials that you can consider.

Terra cotta pots are very popular for indoor plants. These plants have a warm, orange-tan color when unpainted. These porous clay pots usually come with one hole at the bottom with drainage. For most plants, you should also purchase a terra cotta saucer to catch drainage water. You can also find unique terra cotta plants which are glazed, or paint your own.

Another popular choice for re-potting houseplants is a ceramic pot. These are very attractive, and they come in a variety of colors and styles to fit your dcor. Ceramic pots come glazed, and are made in a variety of sizes. Make sure to notice whether there are drainage holes in the bottom of the pot. Some ceramic pots do not come with drainage holes, so you’ll have to choose suitable plants for these pots.

Resin pots are a good choice if you are concerned about terra cotta or ceramic pots breaking. Resin is a type of plastic, and it comes molded into pots with a wide variety of colors, shapes, and sizes. There are resin pots available to fit any style. Most come with pre-drilled drainage holes, but if not, you can drill your own. If your pot does have drainage holes, of course, you’ll need to select an appropriate tray to catch the draining water.

Galvanized metal plant containers are a unique choice, which can lend a casual, country mood to your home. Galvanized metal containers are usually bucket or tub-shaped. Galvanized metal is a special kind of metal treated to prevent rust, making it an ideal material for many plants such as ficus benjamina. While many garden centers keep a variety of galvanized pots on hand, you may find a larger selection at a feed and tack store. Although many do not come with drainage holes, you can drill your own in the metal. If you do use it for a landscape tree or a plant which requires drainage holes, be sure to place a tray underneath it to catch drainage water.

When choosing an indoor plant pot, no matter what material you select you will be able to find a style and color to fit your dcor. All of these types of plant containers are made in a variety of sizes, so you will be able to find one that is suitable for your space. You should purchase your plants at the same time you choose pots, so that you can match plants to appropriate pots. Plus, you will have more reason to transplant your new plants into their new pots right away.

There are a number of different materials from which outdoor furniture can be constructed. However, one of the most popular although one of the most expensive types of materials used for outdoor garden furniture is teak wood. In this article we take a look at why teak outdoor garden furniture is proving so popular.

Reason 1 - Teak wood has a large amount of rubber in its structure and this makes it naturally resistant to what the elements are likely to throw at it from wind, water, heat and frost. Also because it has its own natural oils inside the wood this makes it resistant to damage by insects as well. This is a very durable wood and can cope with all kinds of weather and won’t need much maintenance over the years.

Reason 2 - Teak wood does not actually require any type of oils or polishes to be applied to the wood unlike other furniture to keep it looking great. However, some people don’t like the color the teak turns after several years being outside so will apply a good teak oil to theirs.

However over extended periods of time the natural oils within the teak wood does become depleted and this may result in the surface becoming rough to the touch. Plus cracks may begin to appear in the wood and which can lead to mildew and fungus growing within it. So although you may not feel that yours needs to be maintained if you want it to last for many years to come you should do so. Below we look at how you should care for your teak outdoor garden furniture.

Reason 3 - Teak wood has the properties that when it comes into contact with metals it won’t cause them to rust or corrode. It is for this reason people are now coming up with garden furniture designs that allow them to combine these two materials together, so that they have some completely unique and stylish for their garden.

Reason 4 - Caring for teak wood is much easier than any other kinds of wood or metal for that fact. To maintain it one needs to just regularly wash the furniture down using a scrubbing brush (soft) and some warm soapy water that contains a very mild detergent in it. The other tool you can use to clean off the dirt from teak outdoor garden furniture is a high pressure sprayer, but make sure that you use the gentlest setting possible.

If however the wood has not been cared for and has become badly weathered and mildew has appeared then it will need to be cleaned before it can be finished. To do this you will need to purchase a specialist cleaning product which will help to remove all dirt, mildew and fungus from the wood. But because these products contain specialist chemicals one needs to make sure that the area where cleaning is taking place is well ventilated and away from areas where it can cause damage to other things. Plus you need to make sure that you wear a good pair of sturdy gloves also.

After the teak wood has been thoroughly cleaned then it needs time to dry out completely and this may take several days and only after this can a teak sealer be applied. There are various different types of teak sealants available for use on teak outdoor garden furniture some being applied using a foam brush whilst others come in a spray application. However, whichever one a person uses they allow the wood to absorb as much of the sealant as it needs and no more. Always two coats should be applied one after the other and following the second coat any excess sealant should be removed using a clean cloth.
