The production of Scotch whisky is a very slow process that takes years; A specialised craft in its own right, and a source of pleasure to many when the final product appears.

For approximately three days Barley is submerged in water in deep tanks. During that time as the moisture increases the process of germination takes place. Once that is achieved the barley is then transferred to the malting part of the distillery, sometimes described as the malting floor, and placed in drums.

To convert the starch in the grains into fermentable sugars that will feed the yeast in the fermentation stage is the sole purpose of the process of germination. To ensure that the temperature will remain consistent the barley is turned frequently. Wooden shovels known as Sheils are used to turn the grains on a traditional malting floor. If the temperature rises above 22 degrees they will die and the whole process will stop as the starch will not become sugar…

The grain then goes to the kiln, halting any further sugar consumption and drying up any moisture. It is usually a building two stories high with a perforated top that allows heat to escape. On the lower floor of it peat bricks are heated to dry the grain and consequently it acquires a peat like odour one of the most notable characteristics of a distillery is a pagoda type roof. A further matter of interest to take note of is that the malt will be damaged and unusable if heated above 70 degrees.

Centralised malting companies supply most distilleries with their malt these days, but there are still a small number who prefer to remain traditional and do it themselves.

The grain is milled into grist and combined with water in mash tubs to be heated to sixty degrees. During the mashing period the water is changed at least four times to remove sediment. The bi-product of this mashing is called wort. The wort must be cooled prior to mixing with yeast in what is called a wash back. This large container is never filled to the top as the wort froths a lot due to carbon dioxide. After two or three days all the yeast is killed by the alcohol. The end product of this cycle is called wash. It contains an alcohol percent of five to 8 percent.

The stills in which the wash is placed are made of copper and are regulated to a certain shape allowing for proper distillation to occur. The still method is usually run twice yet some companies do three or more. After all this is complete the brew is then placed in casks made of usually oak, for a period of eight to twelve years minimum.

Vegetables usually conjure up images of boring, tasteless dishes. What most people don’t know is that being a vegetarian doesn’t mean sacrificing taste for health benefits. One way to prove that the stereotype is wrong is through a vegetarian chili recipe. A vegetarian chili recipe is simply packed with both taste and health benefits.

Chili Pepper

There have been debates in the culinary community as to the specific country of origin for the chilli pepper. It is clear though that from the time of the Spanish and Portuguese explorers to this day, chili peppers have become one of the most sought after spices.

Chili peppers come from several pepper species with varying intensities of hotness and flavor. A chili pepper’s hottness can range from the slightly sweet bell pepper or from the completely mild to the extremely hot habanero. Other chili pepper types include poblano, chipotle, ancho, cayenne, tabasco and pimiento. Chili peppers get their distinct taste from the chemical capsaicin which is naturally resistant to both freezing and heat. Today, people can get their chili kick from related products like chili powder, chili oil and dried chili. Some vegetarians however would understandably still prefer fresh chili peppers for a good vegetarian chili recipe.

Health Benefits of Chili Pepper

Those who are in the habit of feasting on a good vegetarian chili recipe would be happy to know that every vegetarian chili recipe has great health benefits. One of the major benefits of a vegetarian chili recipe stems from the antioxidant content of chili peppers.

Beta carotene and vitamin C which are strong natural antioxidants that help fight free radicals are known to be found in chili peppers. Free radicals are rouge unpaired molecules that may build up due to oxidation and cause cell damage by stealing healthy molecules to pair with. These free radicals may be the cause of various illnesses including cancer. The vitamins in a vegetarian chili recipe neutralize free radicals by pairing with them.

A very popular health benefit enjoyed by vegetarian chili recipe lover would be the capsaicin, a natural pain reliever. A vegetarian chili recipe with enough capsaicin can diminish substance P which is responsible for sending pain signals. Capsaicin in a pure vegetarian chili recipe can decrease the sensation of pain without making a person loose complete sensitivity.

Currently, chili peppers are also being studied for other health benefits. It is possible that chilies can help improve digestion and metabolism, improve appetite, decrease levels of bad cholesterol and improve blood circulation. It is also quite clear that chilies have an indirect way of managing our bodies’ sodium levels. A flavorful chili dish simply cuts our need and craving for more sodium.

Vegetarian Chili Recipe

You may have possibly heard how vegetarian cooking can be nutritionally unbalanced for its lack of protein. Now, that no longer holds true. You can always get enough protein by combining tofu and beans in a flavor filled chili recipe. Chili however is almost always best tasting in a recipe pot that is generously filled with garlic, onions and tomatoes. You can also try a little variety by experimenting with a little red wine or natural fruit juice in a chili recipe pot.

A traditional way to celebrate, the New England style clambake, is fast becoming a phenomena as a healthy and unique party idea. It actually originated from the Native Americans wherein its method of cooking quickly became a tradition.

Today, its popularity increased as it paved its way all over the coastal area and inland provinces. This idea began when fishermen caught plentiful fish from the Atlantic Ocean, and people living in the coast prepared their seafood by cooking it outdoors.

Traditionally, seafood at the New England clambake is usually steamed but some people may prefer to cook it by grill. Food during the celebration often comprises of live lobster or lobster bisque, scallops, shrimp, shellfish, mussels, clams and clam chowder, potatoes, onions, corn on the cob, and carrots. The steaming process can take no more than a few hours to an entire day which depends on the taste. Once the steaming is done, the food is served best with butter and lemon wedges.

So what makes people want to hold a clambake? Firstly, it is a wonderful unique idea. Guests may find it somewhat tediously boring if they kept attending the same old parties. One may think that party throwers are out of ideas. However, with the new clambake celebration idea, family, friends, and guests would sure be excited to attend.

Known for its low content of calories and fats, the main dish is seafood. Your meal is prepared through steaming, not breaded or fried, which reduces its calories further. Another good thing about a New England clambake is that the food served is considerably healthy, unlike barbecues and cookouts. Finally, side dishes are vegetables, which makes it even better. Individuals on strict diets will surely find something to eat during the celebration.

You can either make your clambake simple or as complicated as you want. The simplest clambake meal can be made in a home steamer indoors, but does not really capture the essence and the right atmosphere. The best clambake would be held outdoors, where your family and friends can join in the fun of cooking.

The success of the New England style clambake has been confirmed over generations. It can successfully be adapted to any celebration, whatever the size and style. A super deluxe clambake will not only place you in the mainstream of this historical tradition, but also earn you a place in the fond memories of your friends and guests.

With the New England style clambake, your partying is much more fun than ever before - and you don’t even have to be in New England to enjoy it. Thanks to the modern technology, specifically the Internet, as it made delivery of fresh seafood conveniently possible. Now, you can have the best clambake festival ever, anytime and anywhere you want it.

Whether you are trying to enrich your diet with more healthy fruit or whether you have children in mind and are thinking of their nutritional requirements, one great way to do so is to make dried fruit. This also ensures you are getting plenty of natural sugars and vitamins in your diet. Dried fruit is very versatile and can be eaten alone as a snack or used to decorate your favorite jello recipe in a unique way. The only problem is that dried fruit can be quite expensive but this is easily overcome when you discover how easy it is to make your own.

If you want to make a decadent, delicious dessert, you might like to top your jello recipe with some dried fruit. This makes it both better looking and healthier. Adding dried fruit to the sides and top of the jello cake is simple once you have the fruit. Making your own dried fruit is simple and cheap. It is also a lot of fun so if you have kids you can get them to help you. Before you head out for your bananas and apples, keep reading for some tips.

The easiest way to make dried fruit is with a food dehydrator. This device lets you control the drying speed, temperature and everything else involved with the drying of fruit. It also means you can dry the fruit without having to use the stove which is great if you are busy using the stove for other things. Fruits such as pears and apples will dry at 135F and come out succulent and delicious.

If you want to dry your fruit the old fashioned way instead, this is also quite easy. First, choose your fruits. Bananas and apples are quite easy so these are good fruits to try if you are new to fruit drying. The first thing to do is to cut the fruit. The drying process works a lot faster if you cut your fruit into thin slices, although fruit of any shape will dry eventually.

Then, you will want to prepare the fruit. Many fruits will go brown or even blacken when they have been exposed too long to air, and to prevent this, you can briefly soak them in a variety of solutions that will help preserve their color. Fruit juice with a high level of citric acid, ascorbic acid, or even a honey and water can help your fruit looking great. This should also be done to any fruits that you put in a food dehydrator.

After you have prepared your fruit for drying, there are a few different ways in which you can dry it. You might want to thread your fruit on to a clean cotton thread and put it on a rack in the sun. Depending how juicy the fruit is this can take several days until the fruit is dried completely. You should put a cloth on the ground to catch any drips. If you do not have a lot of sun or you do not want to dry your fruit outdoors, you can use a conventional oven instead. If you want to do this, you should set down some wax paper on a cookie sheet. Arrange the fruit slices on the wax paper but do not let them touch one another. Heat the oven to 175F and leave it to cook. This will take a few hours because of the low temperature but do not turn the oven up unless you want burnt dried fruit!

Essentially, your fruit will be done whenever you feel it is good to eat, so do some experimenting, and give it a shot! This is a great and fun way to eat your fruits.

One meal you should start with in Italy is Tuscan Italian food. There is even a specific breed used for the famous t-bone steaks that are known as Florentine steak. Pork is also used a source of protein in the Tuscan Italian food. One of the reasons for their famed use of meat has historical roots. When the country started relying heavily on polenta and other corn products, many people began dying due to malnutrition. It was discovered that the thousands of deaths were tied to a lack of protein and other nutrients. Since that time the Italians have taken care to add more variety to their diet than just pasta.

The real Italian food gem in Tuscany is not just the unique entrees, but the unique breads. There are specific breads for specific holidays and seasons in Tuscany. On Good Friday bread that is baked on a bed of chestnut leaves is served. They also have breads made from maize, fried in olive oil, made with sweet chestnut flour with rosemary leaves, breads made from a mixture of different flours; the list goes on and on. Usually Italian food makes one think of all the different forms of pasta, but in Tuscany the Italian food of variety is the bread. On Easter Sunday special bread that is made with raisins, saffron, and other spices is consecrated in church before being served. It has a high fat content and is served with eggs. There are also sweet rolls that are eaten on the St. Anthony feast day. Who knew that Italian food included so many different breads? Just as there are many different cheeses in Italian food, there are just as many Italian food breads to serve with them.

The Italian food of Trentino-Alto Adige

Prior to 1550 the food in this region was known for its simplicity. Food was simply meant for sustenance and a distinct regional flavor had yet to emerge. However, that all changed in 1550. That is the time of the Council of Trent. The Council of Trent was an Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church. The council was held in response to the growing Protestant Reformation in an effort to counter it. It is hard to imagine that such a religious and political event would have any affect whatsoever on the local Italian food. However, when all of these high ranking church officials came to the area, they brought with themselves a taste for fine food. It is this event that first taught the region to appreciate the art of fine cooking. This is a great example of how history has shaped the current state of Italian food.

Health conscious travelers should also note that lard is still a very popular ingredient in the area. Those concerned with saturated fat should be sure to enquire about the ingredients of the Italian food they are enjoying in this region. But it is important to note that many chefs find that lard is the best ingredient for certain situations and the Italian food chefs in this region certainly feel that way.

The Friuli-Venezia Giulia Italian food

This region shares a border with the former Yugoslavia and shares a lot of the same traditions, including culinary traditions. The Italian food here is strong with Austrian, Hungarian, Slovenian, and Croatian influences. One of places that this is most apparent is in the beer halls of the area. Here they feature such dishes as Viennese sausage and goulash. Goulash, which originated as a Hungarian dish, has taken on a distinct Italian taste here and can often be found in fine Italian food restaurants both in and out of Italy. Goulash is immensely popular in this region and is a thick stew of beef and local vegetables such as onions and red peppers. It is very thick and seasoned with paprika and can be served with pasta. Another dish that makes a frequent appearance at the beer halls in this area is Bohemian hare.

There are many other foods specific to the area. The sweeter side of the Italian food here includes strudel. Most of the desserts here are flour based and so strudel is very common. One of the most common dishes found in the area is polenta. This is a dish of boiled cornmeal and is a staple of the regional diet and can be found served with all types of Italian food including both meat and cheese dishes. It is most similar to American grits. Another Italian food staple that must be mentioned in this region is the cheese. The world famous Montasio cheese comes from this region. If you like your Italian food with lots of cheese, and not just mozzarella, than this is the region for you. One last dish that must be mentioned is brovada. This is a dish that is unique to the region. It is most simply turnips that are preserved in marc. This most certainly is not a dish that most people think of when thinking about Italian food, but it is a dish that is unique to Italy and is therefore an important part o Italian food.

The holiday season is now upon us and you suddenly find that you have run out both of time and gift ideas for that someone special in your life. Well there is no need to worry as you still have time to get them a gift that they will truly enjoy. The best part is that all of this can be done from the comfort of your own home. Make it easy on yourself and still find that very thoughtful gift. Think about a Holiday gift Basket.

The great thing about a holiday gift basket is that there are a wide variety of different types. They include those that contain foods or drink to those which wine and gourmet snacks. These beautiful gift baskets are at a price that won’t break the bank.

Giving someone a gourmet food gift basket is sure to put a smile on their face. Gift baskets have become a wonderful gift of choice by many people who are looking to give that special gift. Most gourmet gift baskets will include such items is cheeses, fine wines and other items. These are perfect for the Holidays. A gift basket will be enjoyed by friends and family throughout the Holiday season.

Another choice is the scrumptious Chocolate Gift Baskets that are available. These are always a favorite during the Holidays. These can include fine chocolate gifts and boxed chocolates from Ghirardelli, Harry & David, Godiva, Hershey’s, Botticelli, Cocoa Pete and more. If that someone on your gift list has a sweet tooth, this is a gift that will be remembered for a long time.

Chocolate gift baskets many times are topped off with chocolate fudge, mud cakes, chocolate cookies, chocolate scones and a range of other chocolate confectionary. Here again the choice are many. The range of confectionary can include the likes of Milk Chocolate Mocha Beans, Brent & Sam’s Gourmet Chocolate Chip Cookies or Golden Walnut Cookies with Chocolate Fudge Filling. I may get one of these for myself.

Another Holiday gift basket idea is the gourmet food basket. The idea here is to give something with a touch of class and style. There are many choices and a wide range of prices. One of the main benefits with using a company that specializes in gift baskets is that they know what goes well together. They will offer a basket that is far superior to anything that you might to be able to put together yourself.

Whichever holiday gift basket you choose you can be sure it will be appreciated and enjoyed for a long time. And remember, gift baskets aren’t just for the Christmas holidays. You can find an appropriate gift basket for almost any holiday or gift giving occasion.

So whether it’s Christmas, Thanksgiving, Valentine’s Day, Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day or any other occasion for celebration or congratulations, think about a special gift basket for someone on that special day. You can’t go wrong. And who knows, you might just get one in return - that is if you’re really lucky.

I don’t buy wine because I like the taste, I buy wine because I like to get drunk. I know many people out there that will buy wine for cooking with, or to have a nice glass to compliment their meal, or save it for when they have guests over.

I love getting drunk. It makes me think I can do anything I want in the world, I am invincible. However whenever I buy wine, I almost always regret it. I find wine gets me drunkest the quickest, especially if I buy wine that is really cheap. But every time I drink the stuff, I get a wicked hangover the next day. I never learn.

Yesterday I went to buy wine at my local threshers, and they had the audacity to I.D me. I have been going there for almost 3 years now. But they have a new buy wine policy. Instead of looking over 21 now, their buy wine policy is look 35! Look 35!? What a waste of time and energy, they must have to I.D almost everyone who goes in there!

Luckily I had my driving license on me, they accepted after scrutinizing my photo, and I was able to buy wine. I think I may boycott that place from future, sometimes I just like to leave the house with just a fiver to buy wine, remembering I need I.D every time can be a ball-ache.

getting drunk before a night out is the best way to go. It makes the night much cheaper, and makes it seem a lot warmer than it actually is outside! I can leave my jacket at home

However whenever we get ready for a night out, it’s usually around 9pm, by this time most of the local shops around for me to buy wine are closed. The only place that opens till 11pm is Threshers. As I had caused a massive scene the last time I was in there, I didn’t fancy going in their anymore.

the only way I could think of to get around my problem to buy wine was to seek the help of my friends. They were not ecstatic about it, to say the least, and only agreed to buy wine for me, if I would give them a glass from it! Whatever happened to just helping a friend out for teh sake of it!?

my new plan is to go to tesco, and buy wine in a giant case. Stock up in my house, so I don’t have to go threshers to buy wine or ask my friends for any favours|! The only problem is, with me having wine in my house, I may start drinking everyday!

A healthy calories loss diet and a well planned work-out routine is at the heart of every successful weight loss program however even with these core components and with the best of intentions, many people do not lose weight because they fail to set realistic goals. They do not plan their weight loss or the rate of this weight loss carefully and they become discouraged and give up. Every successful weight loss plan needs goal setting techniques that will keep them focused, encouraged and ultimately successful.

The rate of weight loss is considered by doctors and others in this field to be approximately 1-2 pounds each week. These may not seem much but it is sufficient for your body to accommodate your weight loss and remain healthy and it is also enough to continue to lose weight over an extended period of time. Aiming for a weight loss greater than this will see you needing to make drastic cuts to your calories loss diet that may not be sustained and may also see you quitting your quest for a slimmer, healthier body and life.

Reduce the outcomes you expect of your weight loss if they are unrealistic because dropping a pound or two each week is a success that you can enjoy and continue to achieve. Celebrate this drop in weight, stick with your calories loss diet and stay focused on continuing to reach this gaol on a regular basis. A slow and steady weight loss is a great way to stay motivated and this keeps you committed even when your weight loss may slow down for a time.

Think in percentages, not pounds as weight loss is not just about losing a set amount of weight. If you want to get down to a healthy weight and stay there you should focus on losing 10-20% of your whole body weight, not just the amount of pounds you want to lose. You may be surprised about the amount of weight you need to lose for a doctor to consider you healthy so if you weigh 200 pounds, losing just 20-40 pounds could put in a healthy weight range.

Measure your weight loss in different ways to see the full impact of healthy eating and exercise on your body shape and include in your goals these different ways of charting your weight loss. The measurements you read on your scales do reflect your weight loss but so does the size of your waist, your hips and your chest. Sometimes you will find the loss of your body mass plateaus for a time but your body measurements continue to diminish so make sure both of these forms of measurement are part of your goals.

Include the number game in your weight loss goals to lose weight safely, healthily and to keep it off permanently with a recommended weight loss of 1-2 pounds each week, so that to lose 20 pounds will take you around 10 weeks. Determining a weight loss per week may seem constraining but if this weight loss rate is realistic you will be able to reach it and it will help you remain committed to your calories loss eating plan and your exercise routine. The journey towards permanent weight loss and good health is a reflection of the hare and the tortoise story where the slow and steady hare reached his ultimate goal!

Try to reduce your daily calorie intake by 500 per day either by exercising more and burning more calories or by eating less. Use a calories counter to estimate the changes you need to make to bring about this calories loss each day and use it to determine the foods that you can continue to include in your menu. Losing weight is a numbers game so get familiar with those numbers and how to use them to lose weight.

Create goals that can be achieved soon but remain focused on the ultimate goal and reflect this determination in your calories loss eating habits and your exercise program. Always include opportunities for the celebration of your weight loss successes along the way and reward yourself with special treats like clothes, CD’s, or even a night out somewhere special. Use these rewards as incentives to continue losing weight and always keep looking ahead at the final goal - the new you.

The production of Scotch whisky is a very slow process that takes years; A specialised craft in its own right, and a source of pleasure to many when the final product appears.

Barley is placed in deep tanks of water for approximately three days. As the moisture increases it promotes the germination process. After the germination process, the barley is then moved to the malting segment of the distillery where it will go into drums sometimes known as the malting floor.

The entire purpose of germination is to convert the starch in the grains into fermentable sugars that will feed the yeast during the fermentation stage. As the temperature has to remain consistent the barley is turned frequently while this is taking place with a wooden shovel, usually referred to as a sheil on a traditional malting floor. If the temperature rises above 22 degrees the grains will die and the entire process halt because the starch won’t be converted into sugar.

The grain is then kilned as to halt the continuation of sugar consumption the kiln will dry up any moister. Generally a kiln is a building standing two stories in height with the top perforated to allow all heat to leave. The lower floor contains peat bricks that are heated. During this process the grain is dried and takes on that peat like reek. The pagoda style roof on a distillery is the most noticeable characteristic. The malt must not be heated above 70 degrees or it will surely be damaged and unusable.

A few distilleries in this day and age still make their own malt in the traditional way, but most of them buy it from centralised malting companies.

The wash is then placed in copper stills regulated to a certain shape that allows for
satisfactory distillation to take place. The use of the stills usually takes place twice in most distilleries, but some companies do the process three times or more. When all this has been completed the end product is placed in casks usually made of oak for a length of time eight to twelve years minimum.
